Causes of Hemorrhoids

Technically, everyone has hemorrhoids which are basically cushions of tissue within the anal canal that help in the passing of stool. This tissue is made up of blood vessels and the supporting muscle fibers. However, hemorrhoids is a general term that is usually applied when talking of those people who have enlarged hemorrhoids.

The exact cause of hemorrhoids is not assured by doctors or scientists. There are some theories though. One idea is that the hemorrhoidal cushions become enlarged for one reason or another which causes the tissue to protrude into the anal cavity. Here are some of the things that might cause the hemorrhoidal cushion to enlarge.

Having a diet that contains inadequate amounts of fiber can cause stool to harden. This will affect your ability to push stool out as efficiently. The more strain that is required of the muscles of the anal wall and sphincter, the more possible that the pressure will cause the hemorrhoidal cushion to enlarge.

Prolonged sitting and straining itself is obviously something to avoid. Try not to sit on the toilet too long or strain too hard. Often jogging or other forms of activity can help. If you are one of those that like to keep magazines by the toilet you might want to reconsider.

Pregnancy naturally causes more pressure on the hemorrhoidal cushion and can certainly cause enlarged hemorrhoids.

Pelvic tumors again through extra pressure placed on the hemorrhoidal cushion can cause an environment that causes enlarged hemorrhoids.

Old age can also be one of the causes of hemorrhoids. Over time, the hemorrhoidal tissue can begin to deteriorate and thus protrude into the anal cavity.

Depending on whether the hemorrhoid is internal or external, your symptoms will vary. Because visceral nerves do not have pain sensors, you will not feel internal hemorrhoids. However, since they are in the anal cavity and in the direct path of your stool, you will see blood in your stool. External hemorrhoids can be more painful as the somatic nerves do relay pain. Because these hemorrhoids are not being constantly aggravated by your stool however you will likely not see blood. The best way to determine if you have hemorrhoids is definitely to go see a doctor because there are other things that may be wrong rather than simply hemorrhoids. Anal fissures, fistulae, perianal skin diseases, infections, or tumors can show similar symptoms.

Hemorrhoids are found for the most part in individuals between the ages of 45-65. Though most hemorrhoids are actually self-healing, if any complications arise (or if you have incorrectly diagnosed your problem) you could put yourself in a dangerous position. If you notice any of the symptoms mentioned it would be a good idea to go see a doctor.
